What is a "ChromaKey" Background?

Prologue: With the advent of computers and "digital" photography, came the amazing and liberating freedom to create and manipulate images in virtually limitless ways. One of the most powerful artistic capabilities of all is the ability to "drop in" to our digital images almost any image, color, graphic, or background we can imagine! But first we had to delete the old background. And to make this easier for us, ChromaKey backgrounds were born.

A chromakey backdrop is a solid-color background of a special color tone that is unlikely to interfere with the subject, and makes it easy to select just the background or just the subject of your image in order to more easily isolate your subject, and then make the background "disappear." Why do we want to do that? Because in today's age of computers and digital photography and digital videography and movie making, we often want to make it look like our subject is in a place or location other than they really are. Other times, we may want a deep, solid black background or a pure, totally white background (without having to arrange special lighting set ups and determine and use arcane camera settings to achieve this optically). What a ChromaKey backdrop does, is give you a background color that's easy to select and delete in a photo editing program like PhotoShop, and then you can replace the background with any image, color, or design you like.
